This is Chelsey. She’s obviously very easy to photograph. We shot these last year for her portfolio. We wanted a fun, flirty, lifestyle look. For the nerds, it’s all Fuji Pro400H through the Mamiya 645.
Chelsey and her family are very, very special to me. From what I can remember, she was my first paying client. They hired me to photograph their entire family a few a few years ago. I drug them all out into some field and made them do cheesy poses and trapse through the grass. Much like I still do. The photos were mediocre at best. You can see proof here. But that session has always been so meaningful to me. Not long after that Chelsea and her husband Jonathan lost his Dad to a sudden stroke. That was the last time they’d all be photographed together. When I think about them, I’m reminded of how powerful photography is.
Believe it or not, someone once said to me ” I can’t believe people pay all that money for pictures of themselves” Moving past the giant insult to my career and personhood, it got me thinking. People invest in photography to remember life at its best. Life the way it is right now; today. Because it will never be this way again. Styles come and go, and no matter how cheesy some of those photos are, I’m still humbled that they can look at those photos to remember life the way it was.
